Cervical cancer vaccine

There are two types of vaccines available Gardacil and Cervarix.

Gardasil

Gardasil is a vaccine which helps prevent diseases caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) types ( 6,11,16 and 18):

  • Cervical Cancer
  • Genital Warts
  • Pre-cancerous lesions of cervix, vagina and vulva

HPV is a common virus. Many people with HPV have no symptoms and can pass it on to others. Types 6,11,16 and 18 cause aprox 70% of cases of cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts.

Vaccine works best when given before you have contracted HPV.

Suitable for girls/women aged 9-26.

How is Gardasil given?
3 doses are needed to complete the course via an intramuscularly injection:-

  • 1st vaccine – at your chosen date.
  • 2nd vaccine – Two months after first dose
  • 3rd vaccine – Six months after first dose

£150 per dose

Cervarix

Prevention of the following diseases caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18:

  • pre-cancerous abnormalities of cells in the cervix (CIN 2/3)
  • cervical cancer.

The vaccine has been shown in clinical trials to prevent these diseases in adult women aged 15 to 25 years. The vaccine has also been shown to produce antibodies against HPV in girls and women aged 10 to 25 years.

You can choose to have Cervarix or Gardasil.

Regardless of whether you choose Cervarix or Gardasil the total cost of the three injections is the same at £399. Whichever vaccine you choose you will need a course of three injections.
